LG G Watch Will Work With All Android 4.3 Devices
At LG's G3 smartphone launch event, the company had a few words about its upcoming LG G Watch. Very few words, in fact — less than a sentence was dedicated to the smartwatch, which is expected to launch sometime this quarter.
We still don't have a release date, or any new images, or a price. What we do have, however, is confirmation that the G Watch will work with all Android devices running Android 4.3 or higher.
The G Watch was first announced by LG in March. In this context, the broader Android compatibility makes a lot of sense.
Android 4.3 Jelly Bean was the first version to offer robust Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low energy) support. Bluetooth LE is what helps Android Wear — and most other smartwatch and wearable platforms — work. Without it, the constant pairing between a phone and wearable would take tremendous amounts of energy.
Since announcing the G Watch, the company has slowly revealed more details about the device, first with a microsite and earlier this month with a promo video.
The G Watch will be available in two colors, Stealth Black and Champagne Gold, and boasts an "always on" screen. It will also be water and dust resistant and support voice commands.
