Hands-on: 2014 HTC One (M8)

Hands-on: 2014 HTC One (M8)

March 25, 2014
Gizmag gets a hands-on look at HTC's new One M8
Today we got our first glimpse of the new HTC One (M8). We already know it brings a dual camera, Lite-Brite-esque cover, and some serious gun metal. But what's it like to actually use? We were at the company's launch event, and got some hands-on time.

If you've used the original HTC One, then you already have a pretty good idea of what you're getting here. The 2013 One's aluminum build and overall design aesthetic are back in full force. And though the company spent a lot of time talking up the new features in the One M8, my first impression is that this is more of a refinement of last year's phone than something entirely new. Hell, it even has the same name (only with an "M8" tagged on). In other words, don't expect a radically new look or feel when you first pick it up.
The M8 weighs 160 g – 12 percent heavier than last year's model
The new model's 5-in screen is 13 percent bigger than the 4.7-incher on the 2013 One, but it also drops the older model's capacitive keys in favor of onscreen navigation buttons. So I'd say the usable screen size is roughly the same as it was in the original. KitKat's Immersive Mode does get rid of the onscreen keys in some apps (like the image gallery or any video app), letting you use the full 5-in canvas. But in apps where Immersive Mode isn't an option, that extra real estate isn't really "extra" at all.

Some of the One M8's most interesting additions come from its camera. There's a new Selfie mode, which takes advantage of its higher-resolution 5 MP front-facing camera (16-year-old girls rejoice). It did seem a little odd that, in its presentation, HTC dismissed the importance of megapixels when discussing the rear camera (megapixels are a myth, bigger pixels are where it's at), yet boasted about having a higher pixel count in the front-facing camera. But to HTC's credit, I snapped a goofy selfie, and, sure enough, it looked better than self-portraits on other phones.

The feature I was most interested in trying out was "UFocus" – made possible by the phone's depth sensor. After snapping a pic, tap on the UFocus option, then tap on your chosen point of focus in the image. The One M8 will blur the background, much like you'd see on a DSLR with a wide aperture lens. You can then tap somewhere else and change the point of focus. I even saved three versions of the same shot, all with different points of focus. It worked pretty well in my demo, and I'm eager to test this feature some more (and don't forget, the Galaxy S5 has a similar feature).

The OG One had some of the best smartphone speakers around, with its front-facing BoomSound speakers. But the One M8's speakers are much better. HTC's demo area was noisy, but I spent a few minutes in a sound booth, where I got to hear the two models play music one after the other. The difference was obvious. The M8's speakers are louder and fuller – by a pretty wide margin. I wouldn't recommend buying one smartphone over another just for its speakers, but this is one of the biggest improvements I saw on the new model.
The Lite-Brite-like Dot View case for the One M8
The M8 also has a wacky new accessory called the Dot View case. It's a thin case made of a lightweight plastic with a cover that folds over the screen. The cover has tiny holes on it, so when you tap on the screen, you can see things like the time, weather, or notifications peering through. If you were a child of the 70s or 80s, then it might rekindle some fond memories of Lite-Brites.

From where I stand now, the HTC One M8 looks like another very solid effort from one of the most sophisticated and detail-oriented Android OEMs. But if you already own the excellent 2013 HTC One, I'm still not sure if there's quite enough newness here to justify the upgrade. That opinion could change, though, as I get some more extended hands-on time. We'll have more on the M8 in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.

It seems like someone was able to get their hands on HTC's upcoming One flagship, and has even managed to shoot it next to some of the current competitor flagships (read. current, not upcoming). These include the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Note 3, Sony Xperia Z1, LG G2, and Apple iPhone 5s.

Smart Light Bulb Doubles as Bluetooth Speaker

Smart Light Bulb Doubles as Bluetooth Speaker

The range of new products promising to transform your humble abode into a "smart home" has exploded in recent months, but not all so-called "Internet of things" devices are created equal.

Bucking the trend toward everyday items that include obscure embedded features, France-based AwoX has come up with a simple smart-home solution that seamlessly merges utility with entertainment in its StriimLIGHT device.
The LED light bulb doubles as a Bluetooth speaker that you can control using the AwoX Smart Control app on your smartphone, or from your desktop on Mac OS X and Windows. The app allows you to brighten or dim the light, apply an alarm timer to its functions and control the speaker's volume.
AwoX App

The Android version of the AwoX Smart CONTROL app.

For those who don't have a smartphone to connect to the StriimLIGHT, each bulb comes with a separate credit card-sized remote control. Delivering 110 to 240 volts of LED illumination, the device pumps out sound via a 10-watt speaker, which is plenty of audio power for most rooms.
There's also a Wi-Fi version of the device called the StriimLIGHT Wi-Fi, announced at this year's CES, which operates in the same way as the Bluetooth version.

So while the StriimLIGHT doesn't measure your energy consumption or produce fancy infographics detailing the ambient lighting metrics of your home, it saves space while intelligently wiring your home for sound.
Both versions of the StriimLIGHT, which have limited availability in the U.S., are priced at $99. The AwoX Smart Control smartphone app is available for iOS and Android.

Sony has revealed its prototype virtual reality (VR) headset for the PlayStation 4 at the Games Developers Conference 2014, in San Francisco. Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida stated in a blog post that the Project Morpheus device has the potential to "shape the future of games."
The head-mounted display will boast a 90-degree field of view with 1080p resolution, accurately tracking the user's head movement in real time using a built-in accelerometer and gyroscopic sensors. The headset will be fully compatible with the PS4's DuelShock 4 wireless controller as well as PlayStation Move, to create an easy plug-in-and-go VR experience. The device will also utilize Sony's 3D audio technology designed to create stereoscopic directional sound, changing as the user moves their head.
The prototype is set to be used as an initial development kit for Sony console game developers. Mr Yoshida believes that the new system will "deliver a sense of presence, where you as the player actually feel like you’re inside the game and your emotions feel that much more real."
Sony has been working on the system for three years, with the announcement coming on the heels of the reveal of Oculus Rift's latest prototype dubbed Crystal Cove, which was showcased at this year's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The full capabilities of the VR system are as of yet unknown, as Sony has only released the most basic of information. Neither pricing nor a release date have been announced.

Samsung NX mini: World's lightest, slimmest interchangeable-lens camera

Samsung NX mini: World's lightest, slimmest interchangeable-lens camera

By Paul Ridden

The 20 megapixel Smart Camera NX mini from Samsung

Samsung has revealed a pocket-friendly mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that's claimed to be the thinnest and lightest on the market. The 20 megapixel Smart Camera NX mini sports a flip up, touch-enabled display panel designed to take the guesswork out of self portraits, has built-in NFC and Wi-Fi with Smart Camera features, and is available with a new NX-M mount wide-angle lens for inclusive group shots.
The camera has a 20.5 megapixel 1-inch type BSI CMOS sensor
The new NX mini has a battery-free weight of just 158 g (5.6 oz) and body dimensions of 110.4 x 61.9 x 22.5 mm (4.35 x 2.44 x 0.89 in), excluding protrusions. The camera has a 20.5 megapixel 1-inch type BSI CMOS sensor, is capable of 6 frames per second continuous shooting, and its 1/16000 second shutter speed should help nab fast moving subjects for blur-free digital memories. Though it has a built-in flash, its low-light-friendly ISO160 to 12800 sensitivity range (which can be extended down to 100 and up to 25600) could mean that it's used infrequently.

A 3-inch, 460.8k-dot resolution touchscreen LCD panel to the rear flips up 180 degrees for selfie shots, but Samsung has also included a new wink shot feature to help make including the photographer in solo or group shots a little less cumbersome. As the name suggests, the user just needs to frame the shot and wink at the camera and the shutter will fire after a two second pause.

The camera comes with built-in NFC and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi for tap to connect image viewing on a paired smart device screen, sharing photos across up to four devices, or remote operation. It can even be used as a noise-detecting monitor that's capable of feeding images to a smartphone, which is handy if you want to keep an eye on your newborn from another room in the house.

The NX mini's metal body has been treated to the leatherette finish that seems to be appearing on all of the company's new products, and includes a HDMI out port for viewing the high res photos or Full HD (1920 x 1080 resolution) video recorded at 30 frames per second on a big screen TV.

Samsung has also introduced three NX mini lenses which are optimized for use with the camera, though an NX-M Mount Adapter is available to make the 15 existing NX system lenses available to users. The NX mini is due for release next month in a choice of white, pink, green, brown and black for US$449, and is bundled with the new NX-M 9 mm F3.5 ED pancake lens. The slim and light NX mini with the new NX-M 9 mm F3.5 ED pancake lens

TaskOne multiplies its iPhone multi-tool

TaskOne multiplies its iPhone multi-tool

The toolsets of the MyTask slide in and out of the back of the case

TaskLab's original TaskOne iPhone multi-tool case packs a variety of tools and implements, but apparently the company feels it doesn't offer enough. It's back with an even more versatile iPhone multi-tool. The MyTask could effectively be called a multi multi-tool, giving buyers two sets of tools for different activities.

The MyTask comes in Urban, Bike and Stash styles

The MyTask polycarbonate case, which fits the iPhone 5 and 5s, includes a flat, slide-out back that holds a series of stainless steel and polycarbonate tools. Instead of just offering a one-size-fits-all toolset, like other multi-tool cases do, TaskLab offers two different sets designed around different styles of activity.

The MyTask includes a soft-touch coating

A general EDC-style tool kit, the Urban tool tray packs scissors, tweezers, a bottle opener, a USB drive, a stylus, a pen and other tools that could come in handy around the house, office or town. The Bike version packs 18 bike-specific wrenches, drivers and tools, along with tire patches and sand paper, making it perfect for work commuters or serious cyclists. You can see photos labeled with all the specific tools in our photo gallery.

The MyTask case hides some handy tools underneath

To switch from "urban" to "bike" mode, you simply slide the urban tray out and replace it with the bike tray. It's an easy way to keep prepared for life's curve balls.

The Bike toolset includes Allen wrenches, tire levers, screwdrivers, spoke wrenches and ot...

TaskLab also offers a 3.5-mm-deep, empty "Stash" storage tray that can hold cards, bills and other small items. It plans to develop additional toolsets in the future, bringing even more function to the case. It also plans to make future cases (e.g. iPhone 6 and 7) compatible with the current-generation tool trays so that you don't have to start from scratch when you get a new phone.

MyTask Urban kit

TaskLab has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for MyTask development. Pledges of $30 secure a case with empty Stash tray, while $50 gets a Urban or Bike version.

We like the versatility of this platform but feel like it needs more trays. Sound off on what types of toolsets you'd like to see developed in the comments section below.

How to root the Nokia X, Nokia X+, and the Nokia XL

How to root the Nokia X, Nokia X+, and the Nokia XL

How to root the Nokia X, Nokia X+, and the Nokia XL
Nokia made its fans all nostalgic, when it announced the Nokia X,Nokia X+, and Nokia XL handsets at the MWC expo - a tribute to what could have been, if the company went with Android, instead of Windows Phone. Actually, it could have been even better, as those three are low-end, affordable devices, running a forked version of Android.

The interface overlay might be called Nokia X UI 1.0, but, since we have the open-source Android platform underneath, the phones can have different launchers installed, which we demonstrated for you at the MWC. They can also be rooted, it turns out, which will open the floodgates of installing custom ROMs, and even a few Google apps are likely to sneak in, for a good measure.

If you are interested in rooting your Nokia X model, it is really easy to do - just follow the four simple steps below, or watch the demonstration video. This procedure is likely to void the phones' warranty, so have this in mind when you fire up the root application on your historic first Nokia with Android.

1. Download the Framaroot.apk on your Nokia X, Nokia X+, or Nokia XL;
2. Use the built-in Astro file manager, and browse to the folder where you downloaded Framaroot.apk, then tap on its icon to install;
3. Upon installation, start Framaroot. There are two root exploits to choose from - "Aragorn" and “Gandalf” - tap on "Gandalf";
4. Now reboot your Nokia X, Nokia X+, or Nokia XL, and you should be rooted.

Ferrari Land theme park

Ferrari Land theme park revs up in Spain

By David Szondy
Ferrari Land is expected to open in 2016 inside the PortAventura theme park located outsid...
Car brand marketing usually means slapping a badge on a tote bag and asking a thousand dollars for it, but Ferrari has gone one better by applying its badge to not one, but two theme parks. Ferrari and PortAventura Entertainment S.A.U have signed an agreement to build a second Ferrari-themed park, Ferrari Land, as part of the PortAventura resort and theme park outside Barcelona, Spain. Expected to open in 2016, the 7.5 ha (18.5 ac) site is billed as “an opportunity for the whole family to experience and discover the world of Ferrari.”
Ferrari Land will be built inside the PortAventura theme park
The supercar maker’s previous venture into theme parkdom was Ferrari World, which opened in 2010 and was the biggest indoor theme park in the world covered with the world’s largest Ferrari badge. With its actual and virtual exhibits, a ride through a Ferrari V-12 engine, the world’s largest Ferrari gallery, the world's fastest roller coaster and (of course) the world’s largest Ferrari shop, the company hasn't done bad, Now it’s set its sights on building the new Ferrari Land inside the PortAventura theme park, which draws four million visitors a year.
Ferrari Land will includes Europe's highest vertical accelerator ride
Details have yet to be worked out for the €100 million (US$136 million) park, but Ferrari promises “new and exciting attractions” that will include Europe’s highest and fastest vertical accelerator; a luxury five-star establishment with 250 rooms, restaurants, and a driving simulator; and Formula 1 car exhibits and a slot-car ride.
Ferrari Land will have a five-star luxury hotel
"After the success of Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi, we received many, many requests to develop new amusement parks," says Andrea Perrone, CEO of Ferrari Brand. "We carefully sifted through the various proposals and decided to accept [PortAventura parent company] Investindustrial’s because it is a very solid plan developed by competent people that will bring the magic of Ferrari to Spain, a nation where we have many supporters and enthusiasts, and to which large numbers of tourists flock each year, in part thanks to PortAventura. This new licence further underscores our brand’s presence in this area. Ferrari Land will delight the whole family and not just Formula 1 fans."
Ferrari Land is Ferrari's second theme park
And more Ferrari-themed attractions could follow around the world with Perrone adding, "We will continue to evaluate other proposals for theme parks outside Europe at our leisure: the brand is our most important asset and we have to enhance its value without diluting it."
